"I bark my voice out through a closed throat, pretty much. It’s more, perhaps, like a dog in some ways. It does have its limitations, but I’m learning different ways to keep it alive."
– Share those “ways,” won’t you? I’m waiting for a “Tom Waits Karaoke” to exist. [Source: NPR]

“Hi, everybody this is Brian Wilson. Look what I got here, the Beach Boys box set! How bout that? Look, and I think it lights up. Yeah, it lights up see, it lights up real beautifully. It’s been a pleasure. Brian Wilson, shake, goodnight.”

Joe Kile

Joe Kile - Not So Long Ago (Kings Avenue, 2005)

With summer’s end rapidly approaching, let’s have one final toast to one of my favorite pastimes…front porch drinkin’.  This lovely little tune by Joe Kile moves lazily along like a twig in a stream.  Kile’s never in a rush; he likes to take his time and let the story unfold, like he’s telling it over a game of cards.  Not since Townes have I heard a sound so tender, so pure, and so downright heavenly.

Mama's Little Yella Pils

Oskar Blues - Mama’s Little Yella Pils

This summer sipper goes great with a ditty this sweet.  Not too complex, and completely devoid of pretention.  A great example of the style, it’s crisp and refreshing, with a solid malt backbone.  Hints of grass, honey and lemon play nicely together, with just a nibble of hops at the end.  Savor this one, and let’s raise a glass (or can) to one helluva summer.

Shufflin’ tutorial from LMFAO last month in NYC.

Seriously, people? Per NYT:

But perhaps the most surprising chart performance this week is by Journey’s “Greatest Hits” (Columbia), which returns to the Top 20 for the first time since 1989. Aided by a prominent Father’s Day discount on iTunes, it sold 23,000 copies last week, which helped the album shoot up 83 spots to No. 18.

One More Dawes. A delicate version of ‘How Far We’ve Come,’ off their new album (below). Drummer Griffin Goldsmith, left, gets the lead vocal on this one. For devotees of The Band, this is the band.

PS. Goldsmith looks almost exactly like my pal, comedian Mort Burke.
