Joe Kile

Joe Kile - Not So Long Ago (Kings Avenue, 2005)

With summer’s end rapidly approaching, let’s have one final toast to one of my favorite pastimes…front porch drinkin’.  This lovely little tune by Joe Kile moves lazily along like a twig in a stream.  Kile’s never in a rush; he likes to take his time and let the story unfold, like he’s telling it over a game of cards.  Not since Townes have I heard a sound so tender, so pure, and so downright heavenly.

Mama's Little Yella Pils

Oskar Blues - Mama’s Little Yella Pils

This summer sipper goes great with a ditty this sweet.  Not too complex, and completely devoid of pretention.  A great example of the style, it’s crisp and refreshing, with a solid malt backbone.  Hints of grass, honey and lemon play nicely together, with just a nibble of hops at the end.  Savor this one, and let’s raise a glass (or can) to one helluva summer.

Your first glimpse inside Eataly’s La Birreria

brewyork:

Almost a year and a half after the first announcement, La Birreria at Eataly (200 Fifth Ave., at 23rd St., Flatiron), the brewpub on the roof of Eataly, is almost here. The official opening date: June 3rd. Today, for the first time, we got our first glimpse of the space and a taste of the beer.

First, the beer. Head brewer Brooks Carretta, who bit his chops brewing at Italy’s Birra del Borgo and then refined his beers this year in the US at Dogfish Head, introduced us to the first lineup of beers, which are all named for famous Italian women. Each beer blends Italian and American brewing traditions.

Oh, gonna be good.

Barkeep, a White House Honey Ale, Please: The White House historian says this is likely the first time beer has been brewed there. Not even ol’ Tom Jefferson did it. “It is very safe to assume that there will be more White House beer in the future,” said Semonti Stephens, a spokesman. {Link}

Bud Light Golden Wheat. I applaud A-B for trying, but this is just weird. Why not call it BudWeissen? And are they expecting people to drink it out of the bottle?
As you can see on the silly wheat-swirling label, it’s a “Light Beer Brewed With Coriander and Citrus Peels.”
A friend tried it and actually said it wasn’t as bad as he expected. Called it a generic wheat; nothing special, but nothing particularly offensive either.
