I thought people liked our First Lady, but this is d-riculous. According to Gallup and the can-we-fit-another-pie-chart-on-the-front-page USA Today, 79% say they approve of the way Michelle Obama is handling her duties. A mere 8% (for shame, Oklahoma) disapprove of her. Her husband is at 65/29 in the same poll. “Fortunately, she’s agreed not to run against us,” joked David Axelrod. Among D’s, she’s 94/1 … with R’s, 64/17.
HBO did me a solid and picked up ‘Eastbound & Down’ for a second season … so earth will get another dose of filthy ex-baller Kenny Powers sometime next year. One of my favorite parts of the show, besides Kenny’s Powerisms (“Fundamentals are a crutch for the talentless”), are the times we get to hear selections from ‘You’re Fucking Out, I’m Fucking In,’ his poignant audio biography:
Kevin Buckley is the most talented person I know. It was a one-man show on Grace Basement’s debut LP, ‘New Sense,’ and every bit of it was thoughtful, tastefully lush and most excellent. ‘Gunmetal Gray’ is the follow-up and due this month spring on Dren Records, though unsure of exacts. He’s posted the whole thing on the band’s Web site, but I’ll be puchasing my copy promptly.
Posted here is the first half of the album. No clue on the track titles (save for ‘Tilly Lingers’ @ 3:32), and I’ve made it a point not to listen to side 2 yet.
1. ‘There He Goes’
2. ‘Tilly Lingers’
3. ‘Back of the Moon’
4. ‘Bad Design’
5. ‘Why Would I Wait for Another?’
‘Tilly’ is tasty. Love the Irish pipes (?) and the exhilerating breakdown-turned-burst of energy @ 5:37. There is also an 8-second vocal interlude in particular that would get the seal of approval of Brian Wilson, were he not currently a bag of mixed nuts. Also dig the banjer (my old clawhammer?).
It is a fine piece of work, and I’m thinking up ways to spread the word via work-related channels. Enjoy.
